Install and run your own web server

Running your own server has many advantages and is probably the best idea if you want to publish your content on the net.

You can run many servers like Apache, Sambar and Internet Information Service. Each one of them has of course pro and cons. In this article I will guide you through the installation of Microsoft’s Internet Information Service which comes with all Windows NT versions including Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The later one has IIS 5.0 built-in and is some what easier and with more functions which includes users’ rights and security issues.

Ok let’s get started. This guide applies to both Win 2000 and Win XP. To begin with you need to have your Windows CD in hand so take out your Windows 2000/XP CD from its case and insert it into your CD player.

Now go to Start menu and click on Control Panel. Next click on “Add or Remove Programs” and then click on the third options “Add/Remove Windows Component”. It will take some time before Windows lists the components so be patient. When the components are listed double click the fifth component “Internet Information Service” and it will bring up a list of services which are built-in under IIS. Check the following services and click OK.

  • Common Files

  • Documentation

  • Internet Information Snap-in

  • World Wide Web Services

When you are done click OK and back on the components list click Next to start the installation from the Windows CD. It will take several minutes, so be patient and avoid starting any other program. When the installation is finished you maybe asked to restart your PC. Go ahead and reboot your system to get the installation done.

After rebooting your system you are ready to configure your server. Right click on “My computer” and then click on “Manage”. It will bring up the Computer Management window where you double click the last snap-in “Services and Applications”.
You should now see the Internet Information Service snap-in.

Double click to open the snap-in and then double click on “Web Servers”. This will open your web server which is by default named “Default Website”. That is your web server and that’s here you control, turn on/of
f and configure your server.
