Install and run your own FTP server

Running your own server has many advantages and is probably the best idea if you want to reach your important files and folders from anywhere.

In this article I will guide you through the installation of Microsoft’s FTP Server which comes with all Windows NT versions including Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Ok let’s get started. This guide applies to both Win 2000 and Win XP. To begin with you need to have your Windows CD in hand so take out your Windows 2000/XP CD from its case and insert it into your CD player.

Now go to Start menu and click on Control Panel. Next click on “Add or Remove Programs” and then click on the third options “Add/Remove Windows Component”. It will take some time before Windows lists the components so be patient. When the components are listed double click the fifth component “Internet Information Service” and it will bring up a list of services which are built-in under Internet Information Service. Check the following services and click OK.

• File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service

When you are done click OK and back on the components list click Next to start the installation from the Windows CD. It will take several minutes, so be patient and avoid starting any other program. When the installation is finished you maybe asked to restart your PC. Go ahead and reboot your system to get the installation done.

After rebooting your system you are ready to configure your FTP server. Right click on “My computer” and then click on “Manage”. It will bring up the Computer Management window where you double click the last snap-in “Services and Applications”. You should now see your “FTP Sites”.

Double click to open it and then double click on “Default FTP server”. This will open your FTP configuration window. That is your FTP server and that’s here you control, turn on/off and configure your server.
